Coffee and Bird Conservation: An Update and Latest Findings from Kenya and Jamaica
Date: 05/10/2019
Time: 07:00:00 PM
Description: Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for a presentation entitled Coffee and Bird Conservation: An Update and Latest Findings from Kenya and Jamaica with Dr. Matthew Johnson and Deven Kammerichs-Burke.
Shade-grown coffee has long been heralded as an enterprise that can provide habitat for birds and an economic livelihood for farmers. Recent advances in studying how the various ways coffee is cultivated may affect birds, and how birds may help control insect pests, is revising our understanding of how this globally important crop can support bird conservation and advance human well being. This talk will focus on recent work, highlighting the latest results from Kenya and Jamaica.
Dr. Matthew Johnson is a professor of Wildlife Habitat Ecology at Humboldt State University (HSU), and Deven Kammerichs-Berke is studying bird conservation in coffee plantations at HSU.
Refreshments at 7 p.m. and the program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, in Arcata. Bring a mug for shade-grown coffee and come fragrance-free.
